How to set up two-factor authentication
What is two-factor authentication?
Two-factor authentication (2FA) means you use two things to log in: your password and a one-time code from your phone. Even if someone got hold of your password, they couldn't access your account without the code.
Right Person processes sensitive personal data on behalf of our customers. Two-factor authentication is therefore required for all users with access to the platform.
What you'll need
- A smartphone
- An authenticator app installed on it
Step 1: Download an authenticator app
If you already have an authenticator app, go straight to step 2. Otherwise, pick one of these:
- Google Authenticator
- Microsoft Authenticator
- Authy
They all work the same way.
Step 2: Scan the QR code
- Log in to Right Person.
- Go to Settings → Password and security.
- Turn on the Two-factor authentication toggle. A window with a QR code will open.
- Open the authenticator app on your phone and choose to add a new account (usually a plus sign at the top).
- Choose Scan QR code and point the camera at the code on your screen.
Right Person is now added to the app, and you'll see a 6-digit code that changes every 30 seconds.
Can't scan the QR code?
Below the QR code there's a long key. In the app, choose Enter key manually (or similar), name the entry "Right Person", and paste the key in.Step 3: Confirm with the code
Enter the 6-digit code from the app into the field on screen and select Continue.
Two-factor authentication is now active. Next time you log in, you'll be asked for a code after entering your password.
Logging in from now on
- Enter your email and password as usual.
- Open the authenticator app and find the Right Person entry.
- Enter the 6-digit code shown.
Troubleshooting
I can't find the code in the app
Open the authenticator app. The code sits under the account name — six digits, with a countdown or circle showing how long it's valid. All you need to do is read off the numbers.
The code isn't accepted
- Use the newest code. Codes change every 30 seconds, and one that just expired will be rejected.
- Check that your phone's clock is set to automatic time. An incorrect clock is one of the most common reasons codes get rejected.
- iPhone: Settings → General → Date & Time → turn on "Set Automatically"
- Android: Settings → System → Date & time → turn on automatic time
- If you have several accounts in the app, make sure you're reading the right entry.
I have two Right Person entries in the app
This happens if the QR code was scanned more than once. Delete both entries, then turn two-factor authentication off and on again under Settings → Password and security, and scan the code again.
I've changed or lost my phone
Contact us on support@rightperson.com and we'll reset two-factor authentication on your account. For security reasons we need to verify your identity first, so allow a little time for this. You can then set up 2FA again on the new phone.
