What is an address check?

An address check confirms where a candidate is registered as living, by looking up the address in public registers and comparing it with the address the candidate has provided themselves.
A background check is only as good as the information it's based on. If a provided address doesn't match what's on record, it can be something as simple as the candidate having recently moved, but it can also be information the employer should be aware of before hiring.
At Right Person, this check runs automatically where possible, and always with the candidate's consent.

How does the check work?

The check is carried out as part of the background check, in connection with identity verification.

Candidates verified with BankID

  • Norwegian personal number is provided automatically as part of identity verification
  • Registered address is retrieved automatically from Folkeregisteret (the Norwegian National Population Register)
  • The address is compared with the address the candidate has provided themselves

Document-based verification

  • A personal number is not provided automatically, and must be entered separately by the candidate
  • The candidate is therefore asked to enter their Norwegian personal number in a dedicated field in a pop-up shown after identity verification
  • The same lookup against Folkeregisteret is then performed as for BankID

What happens if the address doesn't match?

If the provided address differs from the registered address, or if an address can't be retrieved automatically, the candidate is asked to upload an official document confirming the address, such as a utility bill. The case is then reviewed manually before being included in the report.

Right Person does not assess what a discrepancy means. It's up to the employer to determine whether it's relevant to the hire.

Is this GDPR compliant?

Yes. The lookup is only performed after the candidate has given explicit consent, and all information is processed in accordance with GDPR and relevant Norwegian legislation.
The candidate always receives:

  • Information in advance
  • The opportunity to consent
  • Insight into how the information is processed
